Behind the scenes of the Expedition (Shipping Department)
2022.09.05 - Every film in our range goes through a complete process before ending up in the hands of our customers. After the production department has manufactured the films, they are ready for dispatch. The Shipping Department, or as we call it at Grafityp, our Expedition, comes on stage now. Our people in Expedition make sure that customers actually get the films they ordered. Their main tasks are order picking, preparing consignments for shipment and loading shipments.
Order picking
The first step in the process for the Expedition is order picking. Orders that come in through the sales channels are forwarded to the warehouse. Is the film in stock? Then the warehousemen of the Expedition Department start collecting the ordered rolls from the warehouse. This is done with order picking trucks. Is a certain film out of stock? Then the production department is called in to produce the rolls.
Preparing shipments
The rolls are fully packed and ready for shipping. An order almost always consists of several rolls. We therefore ensure that the rolls are bundled so that they stay together during the shipment. On the shipment you will of course find the name and colour code of the film.
The address data are printed and stuck on the shipment. In 8 out of 10 cases, these are foreign address details, as we export our films to more than 60 different countries
Loading shipments
Once the shipments have been packed, the transport is arranged. Either by the customer himself or by us. In that case, we charge the freight costs. Depending on the size of the shipments, they are picked up by a lorry or container. The trucks bring the shipments to a depot of the carrier in Belgium or abroad. From there, they continue their journey towards our customers.
The trucks are not always fully packed with Grafityp products. The size of the shipments varies. They range from a single package to a full container with 44 pallets, good for about 1100 rolls.
We load the trucks ourselves. It is therefore important that our staff have a good understanding of how the trucks are loaded. In this way, we can fill the loading volume optimally.
