Removing a car wrap: how to do it quickly and without damage

2025.09.10 - Applying a car wrap? That's an art. But removing a wrap is a skill in itself. Especially when the film has been exposed to sun, rain and wind for years. UV radiation breaks down the plasticisers in PVC, causing the film to become brittle and break into pieces. Without the right approach, you'll end up in a time-consuming nightmare and with an unhappy customer

Carwrap

With the professional tools from Omega-Skinz and Sign O’ The Times (specialist in car wrapping) you can remove a wrap faster. Without damaging the paintwork.

Why it is essential to remove a car wrap on time

Do not wait until the film discolours, turns black or becomes dull. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation makes the film rough and less elastic. The beginning of the ageing process.

The longer you wait, the greater the chance that you will have to remove the film in small pieces. This takes much more time and requires more tools. The result? Frustration for both the installer and the customer.

Removing car wrap with slightly aged film

Has the degradation process of the film just begun? Then you can still remove the wrap relatively easily:

  1. Heat the film with a heat gun or hot air blower to make it more pliable.
  2. Gently peel off the vinyl at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to prevent tearing.
  3. Remove adhesive residue with a powerful adhesive remover such as 600-Z-415 Adhesive Remover.

This allows you to remove large pieces in one go without damaging the paintwork.

Removing car wraps with heavily aged film

Is the film brittle and breaking into small pieces? If so, there are several professional techniques available:

  1. Steam and high pressure

Use a high-pressure steam cleaner. Aim the hot water jet at the edges of the film so that it comes loose or starts to curl.

  1. Film remover and scraper

Apply a film remover, leave it to soak in for a moment and then carefully scape off the film with a Lil’ Gripper plastic scraper.

  1. Strip-It DIsc

As a last resort, the Strip-It EraserDisk can offer a solution. This “rubber disc” scrapes away foil and adhesive without damaging the paintwork.

Removing film and adhesive residue: the finishing touch

After removing the film, adhesive residue may remain. You can easily clean this with OS Xtreme Degreaser and OS Surface Cleaner for perfect results.
