What to avoid when using interior films?
A successful interior design project starts not only with the right film, but also with the right preparation. Particularly in offices, shops, hotels, schools, catering establishments and other commercial premises, wall decals, floor graphics and glass decoration are often subject to more intensive use than in a private home.
That’s why there are a few things you’d be better off avoiding.
Wall deco: don’t just stick them on any wall
Do not apply wall decoration film without first checking the surface. Dust, grease, moisture, flaking paint or a heavily textured wall can affect adhesion.
Newly painted walls also require extra care. Allow the paint sufficient time to cure completely and check beforehand whether the chosen film is suitable for the surface. In professional settings, it is always a good idea to carry out a test on a small, less visible area.
Floorprint: don’t underestimate the strain
Floors in offices, shops or event venues are often subject to heavy foot traffic. You should therefore not use standard print film for applications for which specific floor graphics are intended.
Also take the surface and location into account. A film that works well indoors is not necessarily suitable for concrete, tarmac or outdoor applications. Where necessary, use a suitable laminate and do not apply floor graphics to a dirty, damp or damaged surface.
You should also consider the positioning in advance. Floor graphics must not unnecessarily obstruct walkways and must be suitable for the conditions in which they are used.
Glass deco: maintain function and visibility
Decorative window film is ideal for providing greater privacy or for branding in, for example, meeting rooms, offices and shops. However, that does not mean that every window has to be completely covered.
Take into account the function of the glass, the desired level of light and the sightlines within the room. You should also always check that the film you have chosen is suitable for the specific type of glass and the intended application.
With glass doors and partitions, film can also be used for practical purposes to make glass surfaces more visible, but ensure that important signage and functional elements remain visible.
Test first, then install
For larger commercial projects, it is advisable not to install dozens of square metres straight away. Check first:
- whether the film is suited for the surface;
- whether the surface has been cleaned and prepared properly;
- whether the desired bond is achieved;
- whether the colour, pattern and finish suit the room;
- and whether the application complies with the product’s technical guidelines.
A quick test beforehand can prevent a lot of problems during or after installation.
